- The section heading, thanks to Google Translate, inquires: "Who made the SSC-Khatumo state flag?" SSC-Khatumo is an autonomous administration in Northern Somalia according to English Wikipedia. Mohamed (IP user? Maybe he's registered on another Wiki) provides the name and date (2012) of the person who made the flag. Wikimedia role in protecting engagement of racism topics.[edit]
I am concerned that wikimedia does not so far protect marginalized voices from getting bans in the admin process. It would seem talking about racism is insulting to admins. This would cause a chilling effect on the topic itself. I am not sure how productive this is and Wikimedia has a role to play since most admins are entrenched and will protect each other from the topic if it focuses on discrimination in the admin processes. Banner policies and NPOV[edit]
Hi. I'm curious about whether Wikimedia projects are expected to follow NPOV with their banners and website activities.
I visited Arabic WP (got tagged about an Arabic version of an article I wrote). The Arabic WP has a banner that supports the Gaza/Hamas side of the current war with Israel. The Arabic WP also closed down for a day in opposition to the war. Did the Hebrew Wikipedia do something similar for the Israeli side?
Was there discussion on Wikimedia about using Wikipedia to support a political side? What Wikimedia policies pertain to such banners or website activities?

- Thanks for sharing those discussions. Leaving aside the 24 hour website closure, I'm still curious whether NPOV applies to Wikimedia project banners. Seems maybe not, though that strikes me as a problem for the look and feel of WP as a neutral source of knowledge. ProfGray (talk) 15:41, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- @ProfGray NPOV is a Wikipedia content policy, originating in the 5 pillars. Outside of content it doesn't have too much influence. Communities are allowed to have opinions, voice those opinions and, if the situation has direct impact on their work, or ability to work on the project, advocate for those opinions when their community so decides and within legal boundaries and the Terms of Service. At the same time, they are to weigh this against the point that Wikipedia is not to be used as a soapbox and attention beacon. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 14:21, 8 May 2024 (UTC)

Interslavic[edit]
Hello. Recently Interslavic received its own ISO 639-3 code "isv" [1]. Is there some way to propose addition of the language on Translatewiki so with the expansion of the isv Wikipedia on Incubator, the MediaWiki interface can be translated into isv as well? There are over 7000 speakers around the world right now. One condition for accepting a new language on Wikipedia is to have enough of the interface translated into that language. Right now it's impossible to even begin, as Translatewiki doesn't accept "isv" as a valid language. Polda18 (talk • my contributions) 20:42, 9 May 2024 (UTC)
- You need to bring this up at https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Support. I'm going to tell you in advance though that it's difficult to get Wikipedias in constructed languages approved, although of course some have been. * Pppery * it has begun 14:30, 12 May 2024 (UTC)
Wikipedia Maps has no railroads[edit]
i found no better place to address this: maps.wikipedia.org only shows a map with no meta page about it. The only link on it is to the terms of use which are on foundation and protected from comments from the lesser public 8but would not really be the right place for this anyway). So I do not find any explanation about the rationale and choices made in providing the maps service, and no discussion place for it. When encountering a Wikipedia Maps snippet on a Wikipedia page (example: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Untere%C3%9Ffeld ), and using the "fullscreen" switch to show the map in full, I notice that the map only shows streets and water but not railroads. I am convinced that streets and railroads are both equally important modes of transport and I am perturbed by the omission of one of them altogether. 2A02:810D:243F:F32C:6DAA:F584:7F5A:8C3 13:54, 12 May 2024 (UTC)
- Unfortunately the maps service doesn't get a lot of support from WMF, so changes to it are pretty rare. Additionally, the maps support thousands of features and it cannot be a satisfactory map to all users at once, as people have different needs (Most people would not want to see all busstops and trash points, but some do). You can file a ticket in phab: for the feature request and I would encourage you to do so, but it is unlikely to be fixed in the short term. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 09:32, 13 May 2024 (UTC)

This is a participant-driven meeting, where we share language-specific updates related to various projects, collectively discuss technical issues related to language wikis, and work together to find possible solutions. For example, in the last meeting, the topics included the machine translation service (MinT) and the languages and models it currently supports, localization efforts from the Kiwix team, and technical challenges with numerical sorting in files used on Bengali Wikisource.
Do you have any ideas for topics to share technical updates related to your project? Any problems that you would like to bring for discussion during the meeting? When will Termbase be revived?[edit]
Termbase used to be a great resource for anybody trying to bridge language gap on Metawiki. Why do we abondon such common tool? Are we sure we are equipped to share knowledge, if we imply a single word in different ideas? Have we not invented many jargons/Wikimedia specific terms which traps you to miscommunicate (?_?) -- Omotecho (talk) 13:46, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
- Termbase was not explicitly abandoned. The entire Movement Strategy and Governance page and all its subpages were marked as historical in one fell swoop. I think it would be reasonable to resurrect it and implement Xeno (WMF)'s original proposal from phab:T314007 to move it out of limbo. * Pppery * it has begun 17:48, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
