Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]
1. Briefly describe how your strategies and activities proposed were implemented and if any changes to what was proposed are worth highlighting?
- The map data coverage of OpenStreetMap in Taiwan is heavily contributed by mappers in the metropolis, especially in the capital city of Taipei. So we proposed the OpenStreetMap Taiwan Streetview Survey project to expand our footprint and unbalance the uneven distribution of map data in Taiwan. And while capturing streetview images by car-mounted 360 cameras, we also will use our camera or mobile phone to capture tourism attractions or amenities like place of worships or public spaces, to contribute media files to Wikimedia Commons.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Taiwan and the transformation of community events in the post-pandemic era for Taiwan NGOs and internet communities, we failed to attract regular contributors and newcomers to our events. So we will focus on Wikimedia projects related contributions, like using our own cell phone to capture more meaningful theme photos. And uploading those pictures to Wiki Commons. The adjusted steps make the whole process more smoothly, and gather contributions more quickly, compared to previously planned street image captures and extracted information process.
And there are so many geo-objects on both OpenStreetMap and Wikidata not well-maintained, so we spend part of our workshop time discussing schemes - how to edit and the proper tagging of these geo-objects. We have arranged different topics like monuments, public transportation stations, outdoor trails, and public infrastructure (https://hackmd.io/@osm-tw/H1lDsEZ6j). During February 2023 Wikipedia Writing meetup in Taipei, some Wikipedians discussed (https://hackmd.io/@osm-tw/r1dsEyGpi) and edited in Microworkshop we will write later.
2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you feel are being effective in achieving your goals?
- Using tracking tools like Wiki Dashboard, these tools could help us keep track of the Wikimedia-related project's contributions easily. And on the OpenStreetMap project, several QA and monitoring tools are available using pre-defined hashtags.
And we want to thank the online community for supporting our effect, and making necessary cleanup if they are new-comers unfamiliar with the editing rules. Our team has already announced our Streetview capture project. If there is any problem caused by us, the community could reach out to us.
Of course, we announced each event on established community channels like Facebook Group, Telegram groups etc. And in some events held in the Southern part of Taiwan, there are some locals joined us. The announcements are already wild-spread.
The tutor or guide works that we do on the workshop or on-site expedition is not all necessary, We find out that we should avoid teaching everything related to Wikidata and OpenStreetMap projects. That is not possible due to time limitations. And will of course scare people away. We will adopt a more inclusive approach and add more basic training material. We hope that way could retain people and let new-comers show up again. And making our promotion more attractive.
3. What challenges or obstacles have you encountered so far?
- The COVID-19 pandemic in Taiwan is the first challenge we face during the whole time, making promoting our event and attracting participants very hard. We mentioned this issue several times and made some adjustments. We have to admit that it is not easy to resolve and hope the future will be bright.
And we have to admit that doing fix-location workshops is much easier according to our previous experiences than capturing streetview’s images tours. We plan to add more workshop events and make the streetview tours much smaller. And the most radicle setting, we could reduce the participants of streetview-captures tour to just a few people to drive and to record streetview images. Using own camera to capture tourist hot spots and attractions photos, then upload to Wiki Commons for better reuse compare to streetview images.
And for the multilingual aspect, we face challenges of a lack of people who could write in Taiwanese Hokkien, locally known as Taiwanese. With just a few people's abilities to write in the standard POJ or Hokkien Chinese characters. Need to reach out to the Taiwanese Hokkien community for help. According to the long-time observation of Taiwanese Hokkien Language promotion groups or influencers, these people are not easy to please. We will make a careful plan and out-reach strategies to make sure everything is OK.
4. Please describe how different communities are participating and being informed about your work.
- We have a good relationship with the local open source community, like MozTW, which is in charge of the community space Mozilla Space Taipei Taiwan They are part of the tour trip and help us gather streetview images and help process Wiki Commons photos. We are also highly active in hackathon events like g0v Hackathon, which could also recruit people to join our events and spread the word of what we want to do: capturing streetview images and making use of both Wikidata and OpenStreetMap projects.
Members of OpenStreetMap Taiwan is highly overlapped with members of Wikidata Taiwan, so we used to have joint goals with each other. In the previous collaboration, we crossed-linked village data on both OpenStreetMap and Wikidata projects. And in the workshops section, we not only added objects like buildings or attractions to the OpenStreetMap but also added structure data on Wikidata. If something is missing on OpenStreetMap or Wikidata.
We plan to borrow timeslots from established events like the Monthly Wikipedia Taipei Writing meetup in Taipei, to introduce the streetview capture tour, and have a mini-workshop on the Monthly Writing. And in the monthly meetup of OpenStreetMap x Wikidata in Taipei, we will have a section on editing geo-objects on Wikidata and of course, OpenStreetMap itself. This effect, making the OpenStreetMap and the Wikidata projects are more closely connected with objects on both projects link to each other.
5. Please share reflections on how your efforts are helping to engage participants and/or build content, particularly for underrepresented groups.
- Due to the pandemic and the shifting of people’s interest, it is quite hard to recruit newcomers, and not to even have a plan to engage with underrepresented groups. However, we highly participate to local hackathon events, like the bimonthly g0v hackathons, or one of the biggest open source event COSCUP. And for other National Language that is under-presented language in Taiwan, like Taiwanese Hokkien, Taiwanese Hakka, and varieties of Taiwanese Formosan Languages, it is quite hard to reach out to those group, not even have a chance to pursue them to spread the words, and not possible to invite them to join.
Due to decreased activities of Wikimedia movement organizations like Wikipedia LGBT in Taiwan, we couldn’t have a chance to reach out to the LGBT group, and not possible to invite them to join the events. And for the Formosian Languages user group like the Paiwan User Group, they are still handling its own matters, like increasing its own user metrics and user activities.
In one of the events held in the Southern part of Taiwan, we asked the local NGO group to have a tour. It is quite useful when most of the attendees are not local. We have better knowledge about the local history and what they care about, and thinking about the possibility of what OpenStreetMap and Wikimedia projects like Wikidata could help them.
6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What have you learned so far about these areas during this period?
- Use the resource wisely, and Focus on using the established events or meetups to promote the whole streetview image capture projects. And we have to evaluate the possibility of more online events to break the geo-location barriers.
Checking technical issues to make sure as fewer drawbacks as possible. And leave some try-and-error space to handle and fix the technical issues. For example, we find out that not every streetview images are usable due to distance shifting during our image capturing and matching process. And one 360 camera has fail to recognize the white-balance setting is not configured properly, making the photo not that usable for 2 streetview images captured tours.
We plan to hold more workshops to spend more time on editing OpenStreetMap and Wikidata projects, due to a lack of people to contribute to both projects. And including a more basic training section in the first part of these workshops. Hope we will have more people willing to contribute and spend some time on varies of projects and tasks that is available on both projects.
7. What are the next steps and opportunities you’ll be focusing on for the second half of your work?
- We will plan more Workshops and micro-workshops that will collaborate with existing events like Wiki meetups and hackathons like g0v hackathons.
We have kindly asked The Wikipedia Taipei Writing Workshop host to share their timeslot and let us introduce streetview images captures and geo-relaated Wikimedia content contributions. And we will also reach out to other Wikimedia related groups like Kaohsiung Meetup or MoWiki, discussing possible collaboration events.

- We have gathered other Alliance Fund projects in Taiwan to share their experience during COSCUP 2022. And we also joined the online meetup hosted by WMF to discuss our own submitted projects.
