General information[edit]

  • Title of Proposal: Expedition first-semester foto.wiki.br
  • Username of Applicant: R.T.Argenton

Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

This project addressed the lack of photos of remote Brazilian natural sites. A team of experienced photographers captured high-quality biodiversity images in the... Parque Sesc Serra Azul. The data and images were stored in Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons and shared through publications.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Inviting the WLE winner and the jury was a good strategy. They bond on a deeper level of relationship, which can create future opportunities.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

One of the expedition's most significant achievements was the team's composition. The totality of the organizers was women, showcasing a commitment to female leadership in the field of conservation and photography. Furthermore, the photographers represented a broad cross-section of Brazil, with many coming from smaller towns and cities. This geographic diversity is particularly noteworthy within Wikimedia projects, which often see a strong concentration of participants from major metropolitan areas. By actively reaching out to individuals from diverse backgrounds and locations, we were able to create a more representative team and build out content that reflects the rich tapestry of Brazilian landscapes and communi

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

Research and Knowledge Gathering: Engaging with park rangers, local experts, and community members deepened our understanding of the Serra Azul ecosystem and conservation challenges.

Stakeholder Engagement and Collaboration: We learned to establish effective communication with diverse stakeholders, building relationships crucial for understanding the park's context and developing relevant projects.
Project Planning and Management: Developing a comprehensive project plan, including timelines, resource allocation, and clear objectives, honed our skills in efficient project management.
Capacity Building and Skill Development: Interactions with park staff, local experts, and fellow photographers expanded our knowledge and honed our skills in capturing diverse wildlife and landscapes.
Communication and Outreach Strategy: We learned how to utilize social media platforms, websites, and traditional media effectively to share our experiences and promote conservation efforts.

Through this expedition, we not only developed our skills, but we also gained a deeper appreciation for the complex challenges and opportunities facing biodiversity conservation. This experience has solidified our commitment to continuous learning and collaboration as we strive to make a positive impact on the future of our planet’s natural heritage.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

The location change was the most unexpected and challenging aspect of our expedition. We were initially set to explore Águas do Cuiabá Ecological Station, but our primary contact was replaced due to unforeseen political changes. This unexpected turn of events forced us to adapt our plans on the fly, negotiating with new contacts and exploring alternative locations.

While initially frustrating, this experience proved to be a valuable learning opportunity. It taught us:

The importance of adaptability and flexibility: We learned to navigate uncertainty and quickly adjust to new situations, demonstrating the ability to think strategically and find creative solutions.

The power of community and collaboration: We relied on the support of local communities in Nobres, who helped us find a new location and navigate the situation's complexities. This experience highlighted the importance of building partnerships and leveraging local knowledge.

The value of open communication: Clear and consistent communication with our team, partners, and stakeholders was essential for navigating the changing landscape.

Ultimately, the unexpected location change led us to Parque Sesc Serra Azul, which proved to be a vibrant and rewarding experience. While we missed some of the opportunities we'd initially planned for, the new location provided a unique set of challenges and opportunities that ultimately broadened our understanding of biodiversity conservation in Brazil.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

The expedition to Serra Azul has profoundly shaped our understanding of biodiversity conservation and public engagement. We're energized and equipped to move forward with a renewed focus on:

Adaptability and Flexibility: We'll prioritize flexible project plans, anticipate changes, and seek input from local communities.
Community Partnerships: We'll foster strong relationships with local communities, researchers, and conservation organizations, incorporating their knowledge into our work.
Effective Communication: We'll utilize diverse communication platforms to engage a broader audience and promote conservation.
Expanding Our Reach: We'll explore collaborations with other Sesc units, particularly the Sesc Pantanal, to document biodiversity and contribute to broader conservation efforts.
Continuous Learning: We'll actively seek opportunities to engage with experts, participate in workshops, and stay current in conservation and communication.

By applying these lessons, we are confident in our ability to continue contributing meaningfully to protecting our planet’s biodiversity and inspiring action for a more sustainable future.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).
