Outcome[edit]

Option 2: Learning Pattern: What is one useful learning pattern you can share with the Wikimedia movement?
Add a link to a learning pattern - either a new pattern you created with insights from your participation, or an existing pattern to which you added your endorsement and some significant new "considerations" or “examples” from your experience.

I came to Wikimania 2014 with the Gendergap in mind. Even though there's quite a bit of activities that surround the Gendergap in the Netherlands, the Dutch Wikipedia doesn't seem to be able to actually do something about it. So why not? Do other Wikipedia's have the answer? Why is it so hard to get other woman involved in this miraculously fun and inspiring project?

I attended several presentations on the Gendergap and again, as I did in 2012, discussed it with plenty people. The answer didn't come, there does not seem to be a simple one. I did, however, attend a very inspiring talk on transgenders. Now there's a problem I hadn't thought about before: how about the Dutch transgenders, where are they? The Dutch chapter performed a survey in 2013, about the Dutch Wikipedia. 0 percent of the interviewed peopled used the "I'd rather not say" option of the "What is your gender" question. I discussed this with several people as well: do transgenders feel set behind on the Dutch Wikipedia? The other people, as did I, do not seem to think this is a problem within the Dutch community. It is however good to keep our eyes and ears out for this as well: there's more to the gendergap than just the lack of female contributors.

For this I endorsed the learning pattern on gender identity.

Connections[edit]

First of all, I had a room mate from India: she was really enthusiastic in talking about Wikimedia and I learned a lot, especially from the Indian culture. It's so funny how two different cultures can move people towards the same goals!
I attended the meetup for OTRS (which I'm on) and for Wiki Loves (which I help organize, both WLM & WLE). Then I met up with a lot of people, Dutch, German, English and whatnot. Very much fun! I only went to the pub for just one night, but enjoyed the conversations very much.
