A social gathering for Wikimedia enthusiasts, where we...

  • Drink coffee or beer and some of us have Sunday lunch.
  • Chat about Wikipedia and any other topics we fancy.
  • Exchange books, maps and other source materials.

Mainly a casual social event. You can expect to meet some very keen Wikipedians; however, this is also an open invitation to anyone interested in finding out more about Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, projects re-using Wikipedia, and other collaborative wiki projects. Feel free to come along and raise these discussions over a beer. Alcohol consumption is optional.

People of all ages and all Wikimedia projects are welcome. Complete newbies also welcome!

Please also invite any London Wikimedia people you know (or have had wiki dealings with) – spread the word!

  • I would love to come, but unfortunately I can't remember when Greater Anglia last ran a train to London from Ipswich on a Sunday. (The replacement bus service - which sometimes actually requires two buses - is painfully slow, making a return journey in one day not really viable. Apparently this is thanks to the construction of Beaulieu Park railway station, which is currently about 6 years late! er, I mean 7 years. As you know, Wikipedia is not a reliable source and I would change the info about the alleged Sunday Service on the Chelmsford railway station, but unfortunately I have only bitter personal experience/research to go on here, so I cannot update the wikipedia page. Back in the day (i.e. the 1850s) the Ipswich Steam Navigation Company worked with the Eastern Union Railway to provide a steamship service between Ipswich and London (fortunately well documented) to get around problems running a service between Ipswich and London. Unfortunately the contemporary railway system is not quite up to developing such a work around. I hope you will excuse a little bit of nostalgia, but it was at the London Meetup No. 134, five and a half years ago that User:Broichmore and I puzzled over the image of one of the steamships, the PS Essex, to realise it had been uploaded the wrong way round by National Maritime Museum, and Broichmore then sorted out getting it reversed the right way, cropping the image and adding it to the wikipedia page just mentioned. So it looks like I shall probably have to wait another year or two for a Sunday train....Leutha (talk) 01:42, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Hey! I can't tell how much of this is sarcastic but this is some interesting info for sure! Just in case you weren't aware, the Greater Anglia website says that the closures for the construction of Beaulieu Park are almost finished, for the time being at least. Last Sunday (5th May) the line was open, the next two Sundays it'll be closed (12th and 19th), but from the 26th May onwards there will be no more closures of the Great Eastern mainline for the time being, at least until July as that is when we have info for. Though I think after the next two Sundays that Beaulieu park is probably finished as far as track realignment is concerned - This is also backed up by the fact that every Sunday they are now closing the line to Cambridge for the construction of the new Cambridge South (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cambridge_South_railway_station)

    I missed doing the sign up- I minor crime compared with our failure to document every replacement bus route and reliability. True, to get there on time I did need take the 9.35 rather than the 11.35. No panic the RRB imposed at 9.45 gave me ten extra minutes. 'Down at the station, see all the RRBs all in a row' The guy on duty, explained that the 9.45 stopped short of train I wanted take, so I should take the 9.57 RRP in the opposite direction, change line and arrive instead in Lon Vic with a degree of certainty. As for the Lon Vic transfer out to Blackfriars and hence Farringdon stymied as at Vic- they snatch the ticket, preventing reentry on the other platform. Still was a great meetup-and the way home involved a lovely walk- as the RRBs all went in the wrong direction. They need us! ClemRutter (talk) 12:58, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

London meetups are generally casual social events where we...

  • Drink coffee, beer, tea and some of us have Sunday brunch. Sunday roasts are no longer offered but they do a reasonable pizza now and have a range of other snacks and dishes.
  • Welcome guests from around the world and other groups which meet there
  • Chat about Wikimedia or any other topics
  • Experienced Wikimedians help out new editors and share experiences about anything from copyright to editing tools.

You can expect to meet some very keen Wikimedians; however, this is also an open invite for anyone interested in finding out more about Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects such as Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, and Wikisource.

New and prospective editors are also very welcome.

The pub is quite quiet and family-friendly on a Sunday lunchtime, so younger Wikimedians will also feel welcome and safe. Alcohol consumption is not compulsory!

Disabled access[edit]

The pub has an accessible loo on the ground floor. There are some sections of the pub that are only accessible by steps, but we always meet in the main step free section, usually opposite the main doors.

It's easy to find us – we're usually the crowd with several laptops on the large tables straight ahead of you when you enter the pub. If not, then look for a tabletop Wikimedia/Wikipedia poster and laptops with Wikipedia stickers on them. Wikimania t-shirts can also be a good clue.

The Penderel's Oak is between Holborn tube station and Chancery Lane tube station. Farringdon station and Temple tube station are not too far. The pub is also within walking distance of Waterloo railway station (1.3 miles; 2 km), St Pancras railway station (1.2 miles; 1.9 km) and Kings Cross.

Several bus routes also go directly to Holborn station; if travelling from Waterloo, it is quicker to travel by bus than by tube.

Bike hire (TfL scheme) is in Red Lion Street, just opposite the pub.

Back-up plan[edit]

In the rare event of a kitchen closure or another problem at the Penderel's Oak, the meetup will be relocated to the Shakespeare's Head – another Wetherspoons pub located nearby. To get there from the Penderel's Oak, when exiting onto the street turn left, then when walking past Holborn tube station turn left again down Kingsway, and after a short walk the pub will be found on the left-hand side.
