Please tell the story of each of your programs included in your proposal. This is your chance to tell your story by using any additional metrics (beyond global metrics) that are relevant to your context, beyond the global metrics above. You should be reporting against the targets you set at the beginning of the year throughout the year. We have provided a template here below for you to report against your targets, but you are welcome to include this information in another way. Also, if you decided not to do a program that was included in your proposal or added a program not in the proposal, please explain this change. More resources for storytelling are at the end of this form. Here are some ways to tell your story.

  • We encourage you to share your successes and failures and what you are learning. Please also share why are these successes, failures, or learnings are important in your context. Reference learning patterns or other documentation.
  • Make clear connections between your offline activities and online results, as applicable. For example, explain how your education program activities is leading to quality content on Wikipedia.
  • We encourage you to tell your story in different ways by using videos, sound files, images (photos and infographics, e.g.), compelling quotes, and by linking directly to work you produce. You may highlight outcomes, learning, or metrics this way.
  • We encourage you to continue using dashboards, progress bars, and scorecards that you have used to illustrate your progress in the past, and to report consistently over time.
  • You are welcome to use the table below to report on any metrics or measures relevant to your program. These may or may not include the global metrics you put in the overview section above. You can also share your progress in another way if you do not find a table like this useful.

CIA’s

Nichole speaking to students and collecting there feedback

Continuous Internal Assessment (CIA) assigned to its 1600+ undergraduate students in Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Sanskrit and Urdu. This initiative bridges inequality and brings in a greater contribution from various languages. This platform creates and builds student’s skills of editing and typing. The first of its kind Wikipedia video tutorials in two languages – Hindi and Kannada are given to the faculty, facilitators, campus ambassadors, and students. This initiative included in the academic curriculum not only makes one learn from it but also provides various perspectives making it possible for one to voice out one’s opinion to the world by using the powerful tool of Wikipedia. The CUWEP follows a structure to deal with a large number of students which is not an easy-going task at any time. It comes into action by the active support from the community through the CIS-A2K members who assign the these and give them to the faculty. The faculty intern gives assignments and details to the campus ambassadors who finally spread the word to the students. All of the bodies are of constant help to each other and are approachable at any time. The curriculum is divided into odd and even semester which consists of two CIA’s for the first and second-year students pursuing an undergraduate degree. They are as follows:

CIA 1(Odd semester)
  • I Semester Students – Type and digitize given text on Wikisource.
  • III Semester Students – Write an article on Wikipedia related to Culture and Language.
CIA 3(Odd semester)
  • I Semester Students – Type and proofread texts on Wikisource
  • III Semester Students – Add images to the articles (from commons) which were written for CIA 1.
CIA 1(Even semester)
  • II Semester Students – Write an article about themself on Wikipedia, which they will later use for creating their user page on Wikipedia.
  • IV Semester Students – Creation of articles related to their core subjects.
CIA 3(Even semester)
  • II Semester Students – Create their user page on Wikipedia.
  • IV Semester Students – Add relevant images to the articles which were written for CIA 1.

Internships

Christ (Deemed to be University), Bengaluru has started offering internships. Interested students are guided by the facilitators at CUWEP, Domlur, Bengaluru. It provides help to students who want to contribute to Wikipedia by creation of articles in several languages. This internship aims to bring in the spirit of a collaboration and builds a larger dedicated team as a work force to keep articles on a live track throughout the year on Wikipedia. It is conducted in two batches in December and April- May respectively. Students who have taken Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Sanskrit and Urdu as their second language are given this opportunity which is very limited and hard to find. This has been a fruitful venture.

Certificate course

Nichole with Christ university Faculty members and students took part in Certificate Course

As an active step towards enabling the spread of content editing and contributing skills on Wikipedia in vernacular languages, Christ (Deemed to be University), in collaboration with the CIS-A2K, began certificate courses on using and editing in Wikipedia in 2016 for students. This year, the courses, conducted after normal working hours, have lasted for a total of 45 hours, carried 2 credits to be added to students’ academic records and enrolled 30 to 45 students per batch.

The courses’ objective is to enable more students to help other students acquire skills in using and working with Wikipedia as well as attempts to be both technically equipping and holistic through its instruction. They consist of three major components. The first is an introduction to what the concept of Wikipedia is, which incorporates the history of online encyclopedias and Wikipedia itself, using sources, choosing and drafting articles and moving articles to the main space. The second teaches how to edit and publish articles. Here, common templates, editing, and wikification articles, adding content such as tables and references, legal aspects, policies and guidelines, tackling vandalism and tools for producing illustrations are dealt with. The third component discusses Wikipedia’s reliability and social significance. Under this component, Wikipedia is discussed in a critical and evaluative manner, where matters such as its ethics, existence as a social community, existence as a democratic project, use by students, teachers librarians and journalists, criticisms and measures to improve its quality come under the purview.

Social media campaign

In order to encourage the students, highlight ( article creation and editing), promote the work done by the Christ College students, an initiative has been taken to share articles written by the students on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

On 25 June 2017 one of the student created an article on Max born as a part of their internal assignment but on the 12-11-2017 it was selected as a Google Doodle

Wikipedia Education Program review

Christ (Deemed to be University)

An investment in Knowledge always pays the best interest.–Benjamin Franklin

As rightly said, this investment is seen with the collaboration of Christ (Deemed to be University) and the Centre for Internet Society (CIS), Bengaluru. Nichole visited the faculty and students at Christ and took this platform to share our learnings, experiences, and views on this Wikipedia initiative. Her two days visit on 11/12/2017 and 12/12/2017 to the Main campus had a phenomenal impact where the leaning process did not have any confinements. Her meeting with the students was interactive on both the days wherein the discussion was fruitful. The session began with an introductory presentation wherein the achievements of the Wikipedia in the academic curriculum was mentioned. To keep the sessions active, activities were conducted for students on both the days wherein we had to share in our views on certain issues like Wikipedia acceptance was discussed widely and also the CIAS-A2K members, as well as students, had to prepare a report on Wikipedia wherein a basic template was given.

Vice Chancellor talking to Nichole, Sebastian K A, Tanveer Hasan with Student representatives of WEP at Christ University

These kept them active, interactive and the sessions were full of life which built a good rapport with the facilitator, Nichole. The discussions were later held with students along with the faculty as well as the CIS-A2K heads and representatives which inculcated our thinking process and we all had to now put our thinking caps and share our article creation and typing experience. Along with that several issues were brought up such as authenticity of Wikipedia being used as a research base, video- audio adding issues. Overall the discussion ended on a positive note wherein we learned more and promised to not repeat errors and she built in the faith that each one of us could effectively contribute quality articles by building our skills. She also shared her perspectives of the website and made us rethink and understand that being continuously active by contributing will lead to enhancement of such knowledge systems. The session concluded where students were delighted to have such an enlightening programme being conducted. We are thankful for her visit and look forward to her visit soon which had an inspiring effect on us. Thus, the visit brought in greater insights for all.

Andhra Loyola College

On 10 December 2017, A2K team arranged Nichole Saad visits Andhra Loyola College where there are Wikipedia activities from past few years and VVIT where Indic Wikimedian Krishna Chaitanya Velaga is trying to start a new WEP. In Andhra Loyola College, Management and A2K could review past activities and discuss how to scale up the current program. Nichole interacted with ALC students, management and staff who are been part of WEP or being interested to be part of future activities during the visit. In VVIT, Krishna Chaitanya lead meetings with management where Nichole could give her insights and suggestions about successful Wikipedia Education Program. Nichole, Krishna Chaitanya and A2K team members, met interested students in the college and could interact with them about WEP.

Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences

In the current workplan period, the A2K program tried to revive its old Wikipedia Education Program. As a first step, the A2K program organised a ground visit and needs assessment with the previously engaged teachers and authorities of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences. The plan was organised in collaboration with the Wikipedia Education Program team of the Wikimedia Foundation and the CIS-A2K. The program was organised for two days to identify the gaps and failure of the previous program. On the first day, around 20 students and 10 teachers attended the basic Wikipedia orientation program on Wikipedia and about Wikipedia Education Program. During the second half of day-1, two hours long needs assessment conversation happened with the teacher to understand the current situation of the teachers and institution in reviving the WEP. A2K has proposed teachers and other authorities to share their curriculums and academic calendars and also to organise a digital learning workshop for the University staffs.
