Dear colleague! Thanks for improve translation on Kezdőlap. This old style page. For transfer Magyar Main Page (Kezdőlap) to new unified design, you can make translation of Template:Main Page/hu (was started by User:Tgr, but he does not have enough time to complete this work). Maybe you do finish this work? It would be perfect!

Community Wishlist Survey 2020 needs translations

Hello!

I'm contacting you because you've already translated some messages for the Community Wishlist Survey. We need more translations for the 2020 edition, to create a survey that would serve as many users as we know.

The list below shows our needs by order of importance (most important first):

1. The invitation sent to communities. It summarizes the process. We plan to distribute it soon on this year target wikis. The more translations we have, the better!
2. The form for non-English speakers. Anyone should be able to add their wish, no matter which language they speak. Translating this short form is very important to encourage diversity and equity.
3. The survey itself, where the entire process is described.
4. The preload form, that provides more context on existing wishes.

Some languages are already covered (maybe by you), but some messages have been updated, and there is always some room for reviewing and polishing messages.

Hi PiRSquared17, I personally don’t like it—as a translator, I want to see as many details and raw wikitext instead of cryptic template calls as possible—, but you’re not the only one to propose using Wikidata for multilingual interwiki links: c:Category:Wikipedia link templates using page language is full of similar templates, one per Wikidata item. (Probably that approach is better than yours: the translator sees at least a human-readable template name, not a Qid.) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 20:18, 17 September 2020 (UTC)

Tech News/Community Wishlist

Regarding where the Community Wishlist items belong in Tech News (I moved it to #47, by the way, that way people get it the same day as it opens: plenty of time to write the proposals, but they don't need to wait a week to act and risk forgetting it), lately, I've been putting all items like that in future news. My reasoning is that the actual technical changes are in the future – this is a way to affect them. Sort of like I'd put anything about a specific feature that's coming a few months later in future news, even if there was a call for feedback now. Translation for spam blacklist header not displaying

Hi, thank you for fixing {{Spam blacklist header}}. However, the translations are not shown on Talk:Spam blacklist (eg. {{Spam blacklist header/ar}} is fully translated but Talk:Spam blacklist with uselang=ar still shows English). I feel like on Talk:Spam blacklist {{TNT}} should used instead of {{Autotranslate}}, but TNT is also used in spam blacklist header itself so there will be a template loop error. Template:Gender gap portal navigation/tt

@Frhdkazan: The links point to Tatar pages whenever they exist. For example it links to the Tatar Gender gap/International Women's Day/tt, but it links to Gender gap/News and Events because Gender gap/News and Events/tt doesn’t exist. If that page becomes translatable and you translate it into Tatar, the link will automatically point to the translation. Until that, a link pointing to an English page is still better than a link pointing to nowhere.

The pink background marks that the text doesn’t seem to be the exact translation of the English title—just click on the Translate tab and change the title to the translation of the English title, and the background will be purple again. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 23:25, 6 March 2021 (UTC)

The navigation bar links to English even when Tatar exists, which is unacceptable and needs to be fixed. Until then I will have to remove Gender Gap topic from Tatar Wikipedia's Sitenotice for March, as it will confuse newbies. I hope you can fix the issue, for me to keep showing it to our readers. Thank you.

The default fallback language for Tatar is Russian, not English.

Gender Gap is a meaningless statement for people not familiar with the context, so as a certified professional interpreter I chose to give a descriptive translation here. LOL at those using word-for-word versions. The short Tatar version for Gender gap is "Description of genders", the longer one I used as a tagline is "Women and related topics deserve proper description". --Frhdkazan (talk) 11:22, 7 March 2021 (UTC)

@Frhdkazan: Now you managed to really break the links; before that, all links on Template:Gender gap portal navigation/tt pointed to Tatar translations wherever they existed. So the fix is just to revert to the working version.

I don't seem to understand the first part, as in case of Tatar it indeed started working fine. I would also kindly disagree with the last statement, as before taking the bold step of adding the links I checked the links from various gadgets and browsers, and no, they did not point to Tatar. I did this some 12 or more hours after writing to you here when faced with my dilemma of whether to keep the Sitenotice link to Gender Gap initiatives or remove it on the very Marth 8th). Sorry if someone had to feel the pain similar to what I experienced when you marked the navbar for translation. Glad it's fixed now, but I would rather prefer to always see redlinks for non-existant Tatar pages.--Frhdkazan (talk) 20:40, 9 March 2021 (UTC)

The page translation tools don’t seem to use the so-called language fallback chain that would specify to fall back to Russian before falling back to English. This is unfortunate on the one hand, but understandable on the other hand (developers don’t want to display a page in three, four or even more languages). In any case, if it’s changed, it should be changed globally, not only for the gender gap pages. By the way, there were no Russian links anyway in your version either.

Wikidata currently supports 591 Wikimedia languages and growing, so both Wikimedia developpers and community would need to use "Special:MyLanguage" by default.--Frhdkazan (talk) 20:40, 9 March 2021 (UTC)

I don’t expect word-for-word translations either, but I think that a title should follow the original one somewhat closely (to the extent it’s still understandable for readers). However, I won’t dictate how you should translate, the ultimate decision is yours as someone who speaks Tatar. I just marked that the translation doesn’t look right for me, which could have been for various reasons: translating an older version, translating something else (it’s much easier to get lost in the manual translation system than in the software-aided one I set up), and so on. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 01:10, 9 March 2021 (UTC)

@Frhdkazan: No, Special:MyLanguage is not a should-have. Developers and community members should care about translation and language issues, but this should not necessarily mean using Special:MyLanguage—it’s just one solution, and not even the best one: it uses the user interface language, which may not be the one someone needs, for example casual and logged-out users of Meta (like those driven here by your site notice) may have the user interface language set to English despite of that not being their preferred language. {{Pg}} (which I used), on the other hand, tries to use the current page’s language and uses Special:MyLanguage only as a fallback if the target page doesn’t exist in the current page’s language. This also means that I don’t consider Template:Gender gap portal navigation/tt fixed yet, just didn’t want to fix it while waiting for your answer (and while taking the time to respond you; unfortunately I have limited time for IRL reasons). —Tacsipacsi (talk) 00:58, 12 March 2021 (UTC)

Category for deliberately non-transclusion-aware page

Hello Tacsipacsi, You recently reverted two of my edits where I removed auto-translate switch hack, because I missed some usecases (custom uselang value, use in non-Translate translation page…).

I should be more careful, sure; yet, to avoid future mistakes, what do you think about tagging pages (mainly templates) which should not use new transclusion-aware Translate feature with a category?

@Pols12: Maybe a warning would be useful indeed, but I think either a message box (hidden on non-English pages) or simply an HTML comment somewhere around the {{#invoke:Template translation|…}} would be easier to notice. In any case, I think it should be proposed at Meta talk:Babylon before adding it to many pages across Meta. Transferring template:welcome to the translation system

@Billinghurst: I don’t have experience in the best way, as probably there’s no such thing. I usually transfer existing template translations completely manually using Special:Translate, as there are very few translation units but many languages (for example, I’d split {{welcome}} into just two: one title and one body unit), so using Special:PageMigration doesn’t seem for me to be worth it. You should pay attention to the fact that Template:Welcome/zh and Template:Welcome/zh-hant will need to be merged as the translation system supports only the former language code (and defers variant switch to MediaWiki instead of requiring two translations), and there may be other problematic languages as well. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 23:58, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

@Uncitoyen: It was not broken by my edit (I would have noticed it), but some time later, due to a software bug. I was aware of the problem (see template talk page), but did not want to do anything about it before the bug has been investigated. @Leaderboard: I don’t see any raw <translate> tags in Global sysops’ read view. However, I’m not surprised by your report: while I certainly didn’t leave pages broken, there was a bug that caused pages break later, without any edit to the transcluding page or the transcluded page (and thus it looks pretty much as if I broke the page). —Tacsipacsi (talk) 12:59, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

Yes, there seems to be a kind of a bug: If a page is moved or protected (like this template) it is listed under Broken pages at Special:PageTranslation. You just need to mark it for translation again and everything works again and the page is no longer listed at Broken Pages. At least this was why I have marked the page for translation once again. --02:32, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

@Ameisenigel: But not why this section started. The bug we were speaking about is the loss of translation-aware transclusion support (probably because a translation of the template was deleted). A Community Wishlist Survey update waiting for translation

Date formats in Hungarian

Hello

I noted your reverts and the reason why, which makes total sense. While we cover multiple languages, it is very difficult to have a solution that works for all.

However, we need to have a way to update the various messages we could sent anytime, without relying on translators work. Imagine that one day I need to change "2021. szeptember 14-én" and I don't have you (or another translator) available. What would be your solution to have a way to transform an ISO date into a date format that would fit the Hungarian language?

Thank you for bringing this solution. I'm learning a lot of things there.

Can you edit the translations to add your solution, if not already done? It is perfectly okay to adapt the code I suggest, as far as you keep $date as a parameter.

Regarding Tuesdays, we can't be sure that it would always be on Tuesdays.

I know you’re a community relations specialist and not a programmer, but please get someone at WMF do phab:T272102 (it doesn’t seem to be very complicated at first sight) instead of bloating our noticeboards. For the meantime, the English original is on my watchlist, so I can usually adjust the translation within one or two days. Hello! Thanks for your interest, for starters :D

I've removed the link to /Description page and I even added {{Historical}} template because the Community Tech team is working on better documentation. We are re-using as many translated sentences as possible but on the other hand, the design, sequence of these sentences, etc. are done completely from scratch.

Today/tomorrow evening (Thursday) or on Christmas Eve morning (not later) I'll mark the new version for translation and ask translators to help us and check everything we're changing.

Until then - do you have any suggestions to make the new documentation even better?

Mostly, I mean questions that need to be answered or links that should be provided. The technical side like responsiveness will be improved last, in January.

@SGrabarczuk (WMF): Okay, marking it historical makes your intent clear. I haven’t got around reading the page yet, but on the technical side I noticed that you didn’t do as much cleanup as I would’ve done, and translators need to clean up things that don’t need language knowledge: for example, after marking this edit for translation, translations contain red links to $CWSdescription and $cwsd, as the former translation variables are no longer replaced by their content; today, I could even move a translation unit to create the translation in the right place and keep the authorship information (in this case, I was the original author as well, so it’s not a big deal, but it also works for others’ translations). You could’ve done this even without leaving a useless redirect. I think doing such mechanic stuff for translators respects their time, which is especially important in a time-constrained situation like this: if translators spend their time with these, they may not be able to do the actual translation by the time the survey starts. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 01:00, 28 December 2021 (UTC)

@Manjiro91: So you don’t want to revert again? Good to know, as at first sight the opposite seems to be the case. Also, since there’s no Meta:Three-revert rule, w:WP:BRD can be considered just as official, and it says that you shouldn’t have reverted one time, let alone twice. And I still don’t understand why should I justify restoring the status quo, when you haven’t provided a justification for changing the status quo, even on explicit request. But okay, I provide one: I don’t like it. Do you have a better reason for changing the template? @SGrabarczuk (WMF): Better late than never: User:SGrabarczuk (WMF)/sandbox/4/hu. Although I think a note on the possibility (but not necessarily the exact way) of opting out would be worth included, as people may be more supportive if they know that they can opt out if things go wrong. You should also mention whether there will be a permanent way to opt out (i.e. a preference that’ll remain even after the deployment to all wikis). @Minorax: Why are these particular pages that important? There are a bunch of translatable pages (i.e. those that have been converted to Extension:Translate) that use {{H:f}}, but you hid it only on three of them. (I don’t propose hiding it on all of them, as that would be totally unscalable.) Instead, phab:T290239 should be fixed, especially as it doesn’t seem to be difficult (at first sight, the only thing I’d have problem with is how to name it 🙂). —Tacsipacsi (talk) 18:46, 14 May 2022 (UTC)

Template:List of wikis by project

Are you going to be converting all the other similar tables at Wiktionary/Table, Wikibooks/Table, Wikiquote/Table, Wikisource/Table, Wikinews/Table, Wikiversity/Table, and Wikivoyage/Table? And have you checked all the various language subpages of List of Wikipedias to see how they are handling the new tables? Or neither? [grin] I haven't done any of this myself, but I plan to "eventually". BTW, note that some of the other projects use terms other than "articles"; for example, Wiktionary uses "entries" and Wikisource "text units" or just "texts". If you want to support this kind of thing, some additional "logic" will be required in your template (and/or module). I've also noticed that the Multilingual Wikisource (s:mul:) is not handled correctly by the module. I'll probably have additional suggestions after I look into this some more. - dcljr (talk) 02:13, 22 May 2023 (UTC)

It would make more sense, I think, to add everything in List of Wikipedias/Table to the new template, so that all relevant translation can be handled in one place (and then List of Wikipedias, Wiktionary, etc., could just call the template directly instead of transcluding their respective "/Table" subpages, which seems like an unnecessary layer of complexity at this point). We also need a template parameter allowing for the word "Articles" to be replaced with something else (to be translated on the language subpages of "List of Wikipedias", etc.) — and I guess the same thing for "Wikipedias" in the "Totals" table. I'm imagining something like: {{List of wikis by project|wiktionary|plural=Wiktionaries|Articles=Entries}}. In fact, I've gone ahead and done everything I just mentioned, except I haven't changed the stuff that is currently being transcluded, because I'm not 100% sure how to work with the <translate> stuff in a way that won't break things. @Dcljr: I also plan to “eventually” convert other similar tables; I tried to make both the module and the template as generic as possible to make it possible. I’ll take a look at Multilingual Wikisource, hopefully it’ll be an easy fix. I didn’t go through each and every page transcluding the table, but what I spot-checked looked okay (except for List of Wikipedias/bg, which I manually fixed).

I didn’t add the summary table because I remembered seeing a table without a summary table – but I no longer remember where, so I might be wrong. I didn’t realize the issue with “articles”; unfortunately, there’s no sensible way to put translations of this term in the template if it varies by wiki, so the solution is to remove the <translate> markup from that table cell, and put it in the template parameter (i.e. {{List of wikis by project|…|Articles=<translate>Entries</translate>}}; the <!--T:n--> is automatically added by the Translate extension). Also, you can edit the included part without breaking anything – in fact, you cannot directly change what’s transcluded even if you want to, because technically Template:List of wikis by project/en gets transcluded, which is updated only when the page is marked for translation. I don’t have time right now to actually change the template, but I try to get back as soon as I can.

About your reverts my edits

Dear colleague! Please do not revert my edits in this manner.
In this case, using translation variable means that substituted cide is name of user rights, this is should be untranslated and seen in any languages with these same unchanged form. If you think the final text is grammatically bad, you could add quotation marks or other punctuation. Or add translation, but not eliminate variable. Hello sir.
Some page on Wikimedia Commons called CommonsDelinker/commands contains the following information:

"Click here to process category move commands immediately."

After clicking, it redirects to https://sbot.toolforge.org/catbot/index.php?ref=cdc, unfortunately the website does not work. Is it possible to fix this problem?
