Access to specialized literature
You regularly contribute to Wikipedia or one of the sister projects and incur expenses when looking for the appropriate sources and references? Take advantage of free access to printed specialized literature and fee-based electronic databases or get the costs related to library research reimbursed. "Regular contribution” is usually determined based on the right to vote in de-Wikipedia.

Printed specialized literature

Printed specialized literature should help you in writing and editing articles. You can obtain any specialized literature for an indefinite period as a permanent loan if you are using it to improve a particular subject area. The responsible Wikimedia organization takes care of the acquisition and payment for you and sends you the printed material. While the literature is in your possession, we ask that you respond to other editors who might have questions regarding the content of the book(s). If you no longer need the literature, please return it to Wikimedia so that it can be passed on to others. Moreover, several publishers make their printed material available to Wikipedia contributors for free through their own literature grants. Before making a request for printed material from a Wikimedia organization, please check to see whether any of the following partnerships with publishers could be an option for you. For obtaining a literature grant from one of our publishing partners, only the conditions indicated on the respective pages apply.

Electronic literature databases

Access to scientific literature databases on the Internet is often limited to universities, research institutes, and similar organizations. They can be valuable for providing references in Wikipedia. You can therefore request access to a fee-based literature database. Ideally, several people at once should benefit. As most access has a time limit, you should contact us prior to the date of expiration so that your access can be extended if necessary. You can also inquire about free access to selected databases through The Wikipedia Library. Previously assigned access is indicated in the documentation (in German only).

Public libraries

In your research at public libraries, you may incur costs for which you can request a reimbursement:

  • Annual library card
  • Interlibrary loan (starting from an approximate value of 10 euros or 10 francs)
  • Reproduction orders of non-circulating library works

At Project Resource Exchange (in German only) you can request a resource and register if you have a library card.

Wikimedia reference libraries

Small reference libraries are available at the Wikimedia offices and local Wikipedia spaces. Get in touch with your local contact to learn how you can use the existing resources:
