Creating a wiki club in a university & encouraging students' engagement on wikimedia projects[edit]

Abstract/description[edit]

This session is an overview of the efforts to introduce and utilize Wikipedia in higher education, showcasing a case study from the Department of International Relations and the Wiki Club of Universitas Brawijaya, Indonesia. I would like to share the experiences, opportunities, and challenges that we faced in organizing a wiki club and promoting Wikimedia movement in a higher education institution. Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects play a crucial role in democratizing knowledge by offering access and control over the free dissemination of information, accessible to anyone, anytime, and anywhere. The open nature of Wikimedia fosters the emergence of collaborative initiatives, projects, and programs tailored to accommodate the enthusiasm and aspirations of the younger generation. Thus, the wiki club could support and develop the synergy between Wikimedia Indonesia and higher education institutions to foster global knowledge sharing and support the Wikimedia movement.

Relationship to ESEAP or to the theme[edit]

University wiki club is a growing phenomenon in Wikimedia community, with two of them were created and organized in Indonesia. A university wiki club could be an entry point for the university students to participate in various Wikimedia projects, create a sense of belonging to Wikimedia movement, and establish long-term relations with Wikimedia community.
