ESEAP perspectives in Wikimedia global governance[edit]

Abstract/description[edit]

Throughout the history of Wikimedia movement, volunteers have played an important role in shaping its global governance models. As we venture into the critical phases of Movement Strategy 2030 implementation, regional perspectives are increasingly important in governance-related works and conversations, including from the ESEAP region.

Some of the recent examples of global governance developments including the approval of a guideline to enforce a Universal Code of Conduct, which mandated a new Coordinating Committee; the continued work of the Movement Charter Drafting Committee, which have proposed models for the Global Council and Hubs to support communities; a freshly-seated Elections Committee which is working to design the upcoming 2024 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees election; and reforms and changes to empower other important governance committees such as the Affiliations Committee, Ombuds Commission, and the Case Review Committee.

In a panel format, ESEAP Wikimedians that are serving or have served in these governance committees and staff that support them will share insights and best practices about working on and with these committees, and why ESEAP perspectives and representation in these committees are crucial in order to make voices from this region are heard and considered in the global conversations.
