Indonesian Vulgarities in Wiktionary[edit]

Abstract/description[edit]

People swear sometimes to curse, sometimes to laugh. In this session, a method of having that anger or laugh by editing vulgar terms in Wiktionary is going to be presented. Vulgar words may include swearing, gay or queer slang, or terms related to illegal activities which are frowned upon and considered as taboos. The sentiment made it difficult for these words to be included in general dictionaries despite they are used in the language everyday and having unique characteristics as any other words themselves. Examples of Indonesian words generally considered vulgar will be presented. Attendees are hoped not to take the meanings of the words to the heart, but instead to have fun while we explore these forbidden words that form the living underbelly of the human language. This session will adhere to the friendly-space policy so please do not even try.

Relationship to ESEAP or to the theme[edit]

This session aims to highlight something we all know but is excluded in a horizon that is determined by official dictionaries or language regulators. It will highlight how Wiktionary is able to accommodate beyond this horizon.

Session outcomes[edit]

At the end of the session, participants would learn the usefulness of Wiktionary in accommodating something that other dictionaries may not, or even Wikipedia cannot. We hope that participants would also learn about Wiktionary's Criteria for Inclusion and no censorship rule.
