Learnings from the Global Wiki Advocacy Meet-up - Implications for the ESEAP region[edit]

Abstract/description[edit]

East Asia is one of the most diverse regions for political landscape. This diverse lanscape create a challenge for the movement to advance for their values and the ability to provide services, including, but not limited ti Wikipedia and its sister projects.

The ever-changing and challenging sociopolical lanscape within the boundaries of the ESEAP region makes online and offline advocacy for public matters (incl. managing legal and political risk) one of the priorities (and had historically attracted few attention at the same time).

This will be a roundtable to report on the learnings from the 1st Wiki Advocacy Meet that will be held on the first week of May, and various public/private interactions of speakers with the WMF for public advocacy.

Relationship to ESEAP or to the theme[edit]

We would and are tasked to build the infrastructure for the tomorrow. When we look at what to build, apart from the physical infrastructure and a robust volunteer base to sustain the services for years to come, an inclusive and open culture that advocate for open and free knowledge is also critical at the same time. Advocacy is a powerful tool to partially address the possible regulatory risk as seen in elsewhere on the world and a powerful tool to educate legislators across the region to what Wikimedia is and why this needs to be protected even when you may not support the goals.
