Inter-Community Wiki Meetup

The first in-person meetup of the Inter-Community Wiki Meetup event series is held between Maithili Wikimedians and Commons Photographers User Group in Rajbiraj. After Wikimania 2023, Maithili Wikimedians unanimously agreed in an official meeting to organize an Inter-Community Wiki Meetup series with different Wiki communities and affiliates from SAARC regions. The team members decided to invite CPUG for the first itinerary of this meetup series and offer scholarships* to three members of their user group.


Delegates from Commons Photographers User Group

We started a conversation with the Commons Photographers User Group event coordinator about the in-person meetup event. The selection procedure for the participation of representatives was up to the core team of the Commons Photographer user group. As we have limited resources to support the representatives from outside the SAARC region, we informed them about this condition prior to the selection of the delegates. They had sent the names of two BOD members from their user group who were from India. As we are looking for three members from the user group, we decided to invite a young Wikimedian who is also a member of the CPUG and can play an important role in motivating college students.

The organizers and CPUG members mutually discussed on Wikimedia governance, Partnership, Future of Wikimedia Movement, Wikimedia SAARC Conference and Future collaboration. This discussion will provide an opportunity for both parties to talk more about the governance and structure of the Wikimedia movement, as well as discuss the future of Wikimedia projects and initiatives.

Advance Wikipedia Workshop

Maithili Wikimedians are frequently conducting Wikipedia Awareness Program and Wikipedia Awareness Program Workshop for college students to motivate them to contribute to Wikimedia projects. In the workshop event, there were around 60 students from the Kshitiz Educational Foundation who were part of the Wikipedia Awareness Program. The students were learnt about the different ways to contribute to Wikimedia projects, as well as the benefits of doing so from the members of Maithili Wikimedians and Commons Photographers User Group.

Photowalk event

The photowalk event will provide an opportunity for both parties to learn about different skills and ways to contribute images to Wikimedia Commons. The event will also help to explore different places, which are yet to be covered on Wikimedia Commons. The groups also discussed ways to promote the use of free photography in Nepal, such as by working with local media outlets and educational institutions. The groups believes that free photography has the potential to play an important role in promoting education, understanding, and cultural exchange in Nepal.

Gala Dinner Event

The Gala Dinner event featured different stakeholders like Ishrat Pravin, the Acting Mayor of Rajbiraj Municipality, Subhash Chandra Yadav, Ward Chair of Rajbiraj Municipality Ward No. 7, Jibachh Mandal, Ward Chair of Bishnupur Rural Municipality, Ward No. 5, Bidyanand Chaudhary, Chair of Chhinnamasta Rural Municipality, Shrawan Deo, Chair of the Journalist Association of Saptari, and other journalists, open source enthusiasts, and other personalities. The event brought together people from different sectors to learn about and support the Wikimedia movement. The panel discussion will be followed by a dinner, which will provide an opportunity for participants to network, share ideas, and talk with stakeholders about wiki activities in Nepal. This event will definitely help to identify opportunities for collaboration and support for the Wikimedia community in Nepal.

WikiWomen Meetup

The WikiWomen Meetup event is focused on gathering interested female students in between Maithili Wikimedians female members and Commons Photographers User Group female delegates. The event was led by Nilam Karn from Maithili Wikimedians and Shreya Dwivedi from the Commons Photographer User Group. The session brought them closer as they discussed various female-oriented topics and projects and learned from each other.
