This page provides information about oversighters at this Meta-Wiki. For the policy that regulates its use globally please see the oversight policy.
  • Important: if you are here because you want to request a removal of content please see below. Do not post your request in public.

Introduction

Users with access to the oversight tool (called oversighters) are highly trusted administrators that can remove entries in page histories and logs so its content is no longer available to users and regular administrators. The use of the tool must be done in accordance with the global oversight policy.

Use of the tool

This feature is approved for use in four cases:

  1. Removal of non-public personal information such as phone numbers, home addresses, workplaces or identities of pseudonymous or anonymous individuals who have not made their identity public, or of public individuals who have not made that personal information public.
  2. Removal of potentially libelous information either:
    a) on the advice of Wikimedia Foundation counsel or;
    b) when the case is clear, and there is no editorial reason to keep the revision.
  3. Removal of copyright violations on the advice of Wikimedia Foundation counsel.
  4. Hiding of blatant attack names on automated lists and logs, where this does not disrupt edit histories. A blatant attack is one obviously intended to denigrate, threaten, libel, insult, or harass someone.

Appointment process

The basics of the appointment process are described at the global oversight policy. This section describes the process at this site.

As Meta-Wiki does not have an arbitration committee, oversighters must be chosen by community consensus. Administrators willing to candidate for oversight access at this Meta-Wiki must be at least 18 years old, of legal age in their place of residence, willing to abide by the relevant policies and sign the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information. They must be familiar with the Wikimedia Foundation's Privacy policy and the access to nonpublic personal data policy and of course with the oversight policy, and be willing to abide them. They shall list their nomination at Meta:Requests for adminship under the relevant section the same way as a request for adminship. The vote will run for at least one full week and will only be approved if there are at least 25 support votes and at least a 70-80% support threshold. If those requirements are met the closing bureaucrat may list the successful candidate at Steward requests/Permissions linking to the successful application. A steward will change the relevant user rights if the other requirements are met.

Please include the relevant diffs to be suppressed in the email, as well the reason why suppression should be used.

In emergencies, such as in the case of cross-wiki oversighting and in a few other cases, Wikimedia stewards may perform local oversighting at Meta-Wiki, per policy.
