Photos[edit]

Hajor 18:16, 25 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Thank your very much. I already add all your pictures on the French Wikipedia some weeks ago :o) I also add your link on Egyptopedia and will add your pictures on Egyptopedia/Pictures list (link only) and Egyptopedia/Pictures list (viewable). Aoineko 02:43, 26 Nov 2003 (UTC)

OK! I've just taken a look through the French pages and yes, indeed, there they are, my photos. Tant mieux; that's what I uploaded them for. I'll try and upload some more one of these days. For example, I see that w:fr has an article on the Ramesseum (which w:en doesn't, to its shame), but it's not illustrated. I've got some very nice pictures of that site. I would also love to see a lot more of David Roberts' paintings (e.g., here) – included on the various Wikipedias – and, seeing the dates, I believe there are no copyright issues at all (IANAL). Best, Hajor 03:45, 26 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Great! I will first try to create page to list all your and my pictures. I also have a lot of pictures to scan but I only visit the south of Egypt. David Roberts' pictures are certainly uncopyrighted, but how to get free copy ? Aoineko 04:15, 26 Nov 2003 (UTC)

"Accurate photographs of paintings lack expressive content and are automatically in the public domain once the painting's copyright has expired (95 years after initial publication). All other copyright notices can safely be ignored." [1] Again, IANAL, but doesn't that mean that any photo/gif/jpg of a work of art painted prior to 1908 can safely be used on our pages (including scans of photos of old paintings found on the web, as would be the case with Roberts)? Or is there some legal subtlety escaping me? Hajor 05:24, 26 Nov 2003 (UTC)

I don't know... Can you ask to mailing list about this ? Your english is better that mine ;o) Perhaps, in some case, the time to start to count the 95 years is not the time of the first publication. It may be wonderful if we may able to use David Roberts' pictures! I have a small painting book of him I like very much. Aoineko 05:58, 26 Nov 2003 (UTC)

I don't follow the mailing lists, but I've just asked on the w:en Village pump. Sure enough, there's a lot of his work that would be wonderful for illustrating articles here. He deserves his own article, too. Hajor 18:01, 26 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Please let's me know about Village pump comments. Aoineko 02:13, 27 Nov 2003 (UTC)

OK, there have been two so far:

If the scanning guy in addition done some graphic manipulation on it, then the image's copyright magically becomes his. Does such graphic manipulation include resize and highlight?! I dunno. --Menchi 01:52, 27 Nov 2003 (UTC)
There is one thing that you could do, if you want: if the image does not have digital watermark (I'm not sure how to check it), you could crop/resize/enhance it yourself so that it is not identical to the original image, and it could not be proven whether you or someone else scanned it. If you then post it to Wikipedia claiming that you have the copyright, it is not illegal for Wikipedia to use the image, only for you. Nikola 18:06, 27 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Both interesting, but not really what I wanted to hear. &ndashHajor 18:33, 27 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Hieroglyphic[edit]

That program should be great. I hope that the hieroglyphic will be of good quality, clear, and actually look nice. Most hieroglphics on the net are just crude. --Menchi 02:04, 26 Nov 2003 (UTC)

In fact I'm programmer, not graphic artist. I'm looking for good quality hieroglyphic pictures, any help are welcome :o) Aoineko 02:43, 26 Nov 2003 (UTC)

I don't know if anyone else has jumped into the hieroglyphics now that the new version of the Wiki software has gone live, but I just did up a cartouche which you can see at Sneferu in the English Wikipedia. I also updated the WikiHiero Syntax with some instructions for doing cartouches. --Stormie 05:27, 31 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

It would be really good to create a common database of the hieroglyphic representation of all the pharaoh's names, etc, so the various projects do not waste time and energy re-entering all this several times over. Jnc 08:46, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)
It may be great. I started a WikiDB project some time ago but have no time to finish it. We may be able to do that if we could include template from other project. We could then crate hiero codes on Commons (for example) and use it in any Wikipedia. Aineko 06:59, 26 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

More photos/maps[edit]

User:Martinsteiger on w:de has uploaded one or two very nice photos (see here). And w:en has just acquired a nifty set of maps of all the modern Egyptian governorates: en:Governorates_of_Egypt and linked pages. Hajor

I created a page at http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikip%E9dia:Egyptopedia/Photos to survey all pictures relative to Ancient Egypt. Aineko

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that there is a page with public domain pictures of Egypt here: [2] The explanation that these photos are under public domain can be found here [3]. And as you can see, both pages are under the same section of the web site, and the section's top page is here (containing other kinds of public domain photos): [4]
You may know these pictures already, but just in case. Tomos 04:42, 22 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Thank you Tomos! I downloaded all those pictures but quality of the main part of pictures is very low. But I think some may be useful. Aineko 14:15, 23 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Hieroglyphic version of Wikipedia?[edit]

I saw a version of wikipedia in Latin, fun for the people who can understand Latin. Is the same thing possible for hieroglyphics? Is it technical possible and languistic? To make this will it be a lot of work and how many people can read hieroglyphics? Is it wise? nl:Gebruiker_overleg:Oesermaatra0069

It would be possible if you would find enough people which contribute to the wikipedia... And imho thats rather difficult... --Kajk 10:31, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
