Activities

LexiSession

We promote LexiSession as a monthly dynamics for each Wiktionary. Publicity was made mainly in French, English and Spanish and results are compiled on Meta. August to August: 35 participants (few of them active members of the User Group), 17 thesauri created in French Wiktionary.

This action is managed by very few people and have erratic results, depending on the topic. To be more effective, this action need more pivot people in different languages to disseminate monthly announcements. This action will continue with the same process, planning to be more popular with the time going.

Actualités

French Wiktionary Actualités is a monthly news page about the project. It is translated in English since August 2016.

It is not a publication by the User Group but it participates to the promotion of the projects. Main authors may try to collect more news from other Wiktionaries but they do not plan to write editions in other languages. People in other communities may start by themselves dedicated editions but the User Group do not plan to impulse it.

Conferences

After the conference made in Wikimania 2016, three activities were proposed for the WikiConvention francophone in August 2016: a conference on Why every featured articles on Wikipédia shouldn't skip Wiktionary, a workshop/training to contribute on Wiktionary and a meet-up with a dozen participants.

In February 2017, a public conference was made in a museum in Paris in French, Wiktionnaire : au delà du dictionnaire.

The User Group did not submit any proposal for Wikimania 2017.

For the next report: The WikiConvention francophone 2017 will host a public presentation, a talk on sources and neutrality and a meet-up.

Outreach

There is not enough material to diffuse Wiktionary during fairs or conferences. There is very few slides in English to present Wiktionary. The page Wiktionary/Internal Communication suggests a leaflet and a draft for a poster, both in French, but no collaborative efforts were made yet to translate them and to work on a new material. It will be a task for the future to collect and create an easy-translatable support document for wiktionaries.

Meta and WMF activities

We took part in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey and inaugurate the first subpage dedicated to Wiktionary in this kind of survey. The most supported idea, Add "Insert Citation" to VisualEditor, was pushed to be included in the 25% of dev time dedicated to small projects.

Benoît Prieur went to the Wikimedia Conference in Berlin to represent the User Group and Wiktionary interests.

The User Group did not participate as a group to the Strategy/Wikimedia movement/2017 but affiliates animated their own communities as for French Wiktionary (original in French).

Publicity of this report

Notifications were sent a week before publication at English Wiktionary, Spanish Wiktionary and French Wiktionary.

Plan for 2017-2018

As mentioned in the report, many actions were planed since the beginning and most of them are on-going. A focus on documenting languages was planed and had to be postpone for the future. Nearest activities will be to communicate more about the group on wiktionaries and to build a better way to communicate inside the group.

Personal initiatives in the group includes:

  • Produce multilingual communication material like banners (Noé)
  • Set up a centralized deposit with template structures like conjugaisons, inflections, declensions... (Lyokoï)
